Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS) is an allergic condition that can develop after a bite from a lone star tick.
It causes the immune system to react to a sugar molecule called alpha-gal, found in most mammals.
Alpha-gal is not an allergy to the tick. You don't need to be bitten every time, just once may be enough to trigger a lifelong sensitivity.

Alpha-gal is a sugar molecule (galactose-a-1,3-galactose) found in the cells of most mammals, including cows, pigs, deer and lamb.
When a lone star tick bites, it can introduce alpha-gal into your body. This can cause your immune system to produce IgE antibodies specific to alpha-gal.
Later, when you eat mammalian meat or are exposed to products containing alpha-gal, those antibodies can trigger an allergic reaction.

Beef, pork, lamb, venison, rabbit, squirrel
AGS is triggered by the bite of the lone star tick, commonly found in the southeastern and eastern United States.
However, AGS is spreading globally.
Symptoms usually appear 2-10 hours after exposure, which can make AGS hard to recognize.
Not everyone who is bitten will develop AGS, but those who do may be sensitive for years or even for life.
